Nasal Polyps are polyps in nasal cavity. These are fleshy growths that arise from the small cavities (sinuses) or the lining of the nose. Initially, these are not larger than small drops of water. But in some cases they grow as large as small grapes. These are not to be confused with tumors. These are non-cancerous overgrowths of the mucous membrane. Polyps are of different sizes and are generally yellow, pink or grey in color. In the US alone, nasal polyps are present in 5% non-allergic people and around 2% patients with allergic rhinitis.

People with superesophageal or Silent Reflux (stomach acid coming up above the esophagus into the throat and back of nose) usually don’t experience heartburn or indigestion. Instead, other symptoms such as hoarseness, coughing and excessive phlegm, constant throat clearing, choking, burning sensation and the feeling of stomach contents coming up are typical. Nasal endoscopic examination of the larynx (voice box) and the nearby inlet to the upper esophagus is usually employed to confirm the diagnosis of this type of reflux. In some cases actual 24 hour pH testing is performed by putting a probe in the nose the nose so that the stomach acid coming up into the nose can actually be measured.  In some cases the pH test is performed while the patient is taking  anti-reflux medication, to make sure that antacid treatment is effective in eliminating the acid reflux.

Blood work and imaging tests are rarely necessary in the valuation of upper respiratory infection. X-rays of the neck may be done if suspected case of epiglottitis. Although the finding of swollen epiglottis may not be diagnostic, its absence can rule out the condition. CT scans can sometimes be useful if symptoms suggestive of sinusitis last longer than 4 weeks or are associated with visual changes, copious nasal discharge, or protrusion of the eye. CT scan can determine the extent of sinus inflammation, formation of abscess , or the spread of infection into adjacent structures (cavity of the eye or the brain).

I am having problems with a rotten egg/meat smell. Started 6 months ago around time I had an abscess in upper tooth from failed root canal. Got tooth removed & thought problem would resolve but it didn’t. The smell comes from mouth & nose but way more often from my nose when breathing-and the smell fills up an entire room at home & work & everyone can smell it, so embarrassing! I’ve been back to dentist to confirm all was removed, been to doctor, and 2 different ENT doctors….I’ve been treated for Thrush (just incase), Silent Reflux (until esophogram confirmed no reflux is present), been given 30 days of Augmentin & I also added oil of oregano as part of my treatment to try. The only thing that gives temporary relief seems to be the Augmentin. Problem is after finishing it a couple days later problem slowly returns. Along with the smell I have a thin white coating on tongue & feeling of bad tasting thick post nasal drip-but it’s clear in color. For the last couple weeks the smell seems to be worse when I’m outdoors & especially if it’s hot/humid out. Adenoids is my next guess?? Any ideas on what this could be would really be helpful!!
